The Hydroponic Secret: It's NOT More Nutrients?

I've been growing plants for a long time.
And if there's one thing I wish someone had told me at the very start, it's this:
Your plants don't need more nutrients. They need the right nutrients, at theΒ right amount.
That's it. That's the whole secret. π€«
More Nutrients Doesn't Mean More Growth π«
I know it sounds backwards.
But trust me, I've seen it a hundred times.
A grower gets excited. They want big, fast, healthy plants. So they pour in extra nutrients, thinking more = better.
Then the plants start looking... sad. π
- Leaves curl up or turn yellow
- Roots look brown and unhappy
- Growth slows down or stops completely
This is called nutrient burnΒ and it's one of the most common mistakes new growers make.
So What Do Plants Actually Need? πΏ
Plants are simple little creatures.
They need a few key things to grow well:
- π§ Water β clean and the right temperature
- βοΈ Light β enough, but not too much
- π§ͺ Nutrients β a little goes a long way
- βοΈ Balance β this is the big one
That last one β balance β is where most growers go wrong.
The Magic Number: Start Low, Go Slow π’
Here's what I always tell new growers:
Start at half the recommended dose. Always.
Most nutrient bottles will tell you to use, say, 5ml per litre.
Start with 2.5ml. Watch your plants for a few days. Then slowly increase if they look happy.
Plants will tell you what they need . You just have to learn to listen. π
But Here's the Catch... You HAVE to Test π¬

This is the part most people skip.
And it's the most important part.
Even if you're using the perfect amount of nutrients, if yourΒ pH is off, your plants can't absorb any of it.
It's like putting food on the table but locking the door. The food is there. But nobody can get in. πͺ
What Is pH and Why Does It Matter?
pH is just a measure of how acidic or alkaline your water is.
For most hydroponic plants, the sweet spot is:
- β pH 5.5 β 6.5 for hydroponics
- β pH 6.0 β 7.0 for soil
Outside of that range? Your plant roots simply can't take up nutrients properly, no matter how much you've added.
And Then There's EC π‘
EC stands for Electrical Conductivity.
It sounds fancy. But it's really just measuring how many nutrients are dissolved in your water.
Think of it like this:
- Low EC = Bland tasteless nutrient soup π΅
- High EC = BrutallyΒ spicy nutrient soup πΆοΈ
- Right EC = Perfectly seasoned nutrient soup π―
The Tools That Changed My Growing Game π οΈ
I used to guess. I used to eyeball it.
Then I started testing and everything changed.
The Bluelab pH Pen is one of those tools I genuinely can't grow without. It's accurate, easy to use, and gives you a reading in seconds. No guessing. No drama.
If you want to go one step further, the Bluelab OnePenβ’ measures pH, EC and temperature all in one go and it connects to a Bluetooth app so you can track your readings over time. That's pretty next-level for anyone serious about their grow.
And for EC specifically, the Bluelab Truncheon is an absolute classic in the growing world. It needs zero calibration. You just dip it in and read the number. Dead simple.
What Nutrients Should You Actually Use? π§΄
Once your testing is dialled in, then you think about nutrients.
For beginners, I always recommend starting with a simple, complete nutrient β something that has everything your plant needs in one bottle.
The Growth Technology Focus range is brilliant for this. There's a version for almost every plant type β herbs, vegetables, fruiting plants, flowers. Each one is formulated specifically for that plant. No mixing, no guessing.
For growers who want a bit more control, the Green Planet GP3 system (Grow, Micro, Bloom) lets you adjust each part depending on your plant's stage. It's a 3-part system, which sounds complicated but once you get the hang of it, it's incredibly powerful.
And the Green Planet Dual Fuel is a favourite for growers who want a simple 2-part system that still delivers serious results.
A Simple Weekly Routine That Works β
Here's what I do every single week and what I'd recommend to any grower:
- π§ͺ Test your pH β adjust if needed before adding anything
- π Check your EC β make sure nutrient levels are in range
- π§ Mix your nutrients at half dose first β then test EC again
- π Look at your plants β are they happy? Adjust from there
- π Write it down β keep a simple grow journal
That last one is underrated. When something goes wrong (and it will, at some point), your notes will save you.
The Bottom Line π
Growing plants hydroponically isn't complicated.
But it does reward the growers who test regularly and resist the urge to overfeed.
Less nutrients. More testing. More patience.
That's the formula that's worked for me for decades and it'll work for you too. πͺ
